V2P aims to tackle the high levels of poverty across its target states by supporting citizens to influence effectively the provision of improved public services for all, including poor and excluded groups. It sets out to facilitate citizen inclusion in decision-making processes about policy and service delivery.
V2P seeks change by:
- Building active citizenship: ensuring community members know and can claim their rights; can demand and monitor the provision of public goods and services.
- establishing regular dialogue between citizens and the state to facilitate collective problem identification and solving
- encouraging greater participation of citizens in governance processes
- enhancing the voice of girls, women and socially excluded groups by increasing their participation in decision making
- capturing, sharing and learning lessons of what works for effective improvement in service delivery and using this to improve the evidence base of what works (and doesn’t) in different contexts.
As a result of the work of V2P, there have been some significant institutional changes and responses by government to community needs. Despite challenges in getting these results, the consistency in demand by communities has played a key role in ensuring they are no longer ignored. This is the core of the project and vital to achieving success in community-driven development that is sustainable.
V2P has shown that communities with greater capacity, knowledge and access to information can drive their own development – a movement for change which will continue to grow until governments have no choice but to be accountable to their people.
Our expected outcomes at the end of the project are to see:
- Increased number of communities holding their leaders to account for the delivery of public goods and services.
- Evidence of changes to policy and practice that demonstrate more inclusiveness to girls, women and socially excluded citizens and responsiveness to citizens’ needs.
- Increased number of women and other socially excluded groups in leadership positions.
- Increased number of citizen priorities (as outlined in charters of demands) that are reflected and implemented in State/Local Budgets
- More inclusive and participatory decision-making involving citizens within targeted communities/LGAs
- Enhanced advocacy capacity of community groups, COMENs and regional/ state level CSOs
- Greater CSO, media and state legislature capacity to work together and influence decision-makers
- More and better engagement between citizens and authorities/duty-deliverers
